ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State Lakers forward Ava Cook has earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second week of the 2018 season. The league office announced the honor Tuesday (Sept. 11) morning. Cook had two goals, four points and 12 shots to help the Lakers go 2-0 over the weekend.
After ripping eight shots, including three on frame, on Friday in the Lakers 1-0 over reigning GMAC champions Ohio Valley, Cook scored a pair of goals within the first five minutes of the second half Sunday during a 6-0 win over Bridgeport. She took a pair of through balls from Madz Ham and side stepped the keeper in both the 47' and 49' minute to take the GVSU lead from 1-0 to 3-0 and give the Lakers the momentum for the rest of the match.
She also set up the first half goal when her breakaway forced the Bridgeport keeper into a heavy collision, warranting a foul and yellow card just outside the penalty area. Riko Sagara would hammer home the free kick to give the Lakers the lead. The Lakers have earned the league's offensive player of the week in each of the first two weeks of the season. Sagara won it in the first week and Cook takes home the award in the second.
The No. 3 Lakers are off to their best start since 2010, going 4-0-0 over the first two weeks of the season. GVSU continues their season-opening homestand on Friday (Sept. 14) against Northwood at 7:30. They play their first road match of the year on Sunday (Sept. 16) at Ashland.
